—————————-

FrameMaker Support for DITA

Mahesh is the Product Manager for Adobe FrameMaker. He has managed multiple products and made a key contribution to the first ever Technical Communication Suite. Prior to his MBA, he worked with IBM.

FrameMaker 8 provides robust support for authoring and publishing documents that conform to DITA. The session covers

  • Evolution of FrameMaker
  • Using DITA – rich set of DITA features including topic authoring, map authoring, content fragment reuse (conref) and book building from DITA maps.
  • Integration with DITA OTK.

Developing and Promoting Technical Writing Profession

Himani has been into this field of Technical Writing since last 7 years and currently working with GlobalLogic. She started her professional career as a developer in Socket Programming using C over
Unix. In those days, Technical Writing was not a much defined career option. Most of the writing jobs were outsourced to students and freelance writers who would spend specified period of time to
understand the product and come up with some technical manuals that were never much used. This was the time when she was working with USHACOMM in Calcutta. Later she drifted into the field of
communication because she loved the field and also because of the limited availability of options in socket programming.

As a Technical Writer, there are many skills you will need to acquire to be successful in your chosen profession. Some of these you will learn from your mentor, some of these you will learn in your course of experience and your professional attitude. Having a professional attitude includes being aware of what you as a Technical Writer are responsible for. It also includes the awareness of the ethical
implications of one’s area of work.

Technical writing is a specialized field that requires personal discipline, skill in writing clearly and concisely, understanding of technical products and processes, organization skill, and knowledge of
numerous software tools.

In this session you will get to know a lot about how to develop and promote your Technical Writing profession.

Optimizing Frame Documentation For Online Help Delivery

Pawan is the Senior Documentation Manager at Adobe. Prior to Adobe, he worked as the Documentation Manager at Cadence.

The presentation will cover best practices for preparing Frame documentation for optimized Online Help delivery, where

  • all aspects of navigation – TOC, index, mini-TOC, Forward/Next buttons – are optimized
  • Search returns topicized or article information rather than running chapters
  • Look and feel is optimized for web delivery
  • Context sensitive help merges well with natural article flow
  • Cross-references are optimized
  • Misc tips

Interactive session between Technical Writers and FrameMaker Core Team
(Developers and Testers)

This is the first ever interactive session happening between Technical Writers and FrameMaker Core Team (Developers and Testers). This interactive session would help you to put across your
suggestions/issues/comments on FrameMaker, which in turn will help the Adobe FrameMaker team to come out with a better upgraded version.
